January 28, 2020 – Broaden Your World with Mango Languages

Are you planning a trip to a country you’ve never visited before? Maybe you’d like to brush up on that Spanish or French you learned back in school. Or perhaps you’d like to impress that new online friend from across the globe with some new language skills?

The creators of the language learning program Mango Languages envision technology allowing anyone to use language as a bridge between individuals and cultures, especially now that the internet and social media have brought the world as close as your phone, tablet, and desktop.

The Lower Merion Library System offers free access to Mango Languages with your library card from home (as a Montgomery County resident). Try it as a guest or create a free account with your email and library card. Learn on the go with the free Mango Languages App. Start at our home page www.lmls.org then click on the logo that is on the right hand side of the page.

Mango Languages is an easy to use, self-paced language learning database that uses realistic conversations provided by native speakers in over 70 languages. Do you know someone who has been looking for an ESL program? Mango Languages can get them started by providing English lessons in over 20 native languages.

The program uses intelligent algorithms and intuitive learning to adapt to your unique learning skills so that your progress continually evolves at your pace and level. The exercises use a simple but effective conversational approach where grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are seamlessly combined for learning pragmatic, real-world communication. Cultural notes provide additional understanding and context.

Through a mix of oral and written memory building exercises you will easily gain confidence in your ability to recall what you’ve learned and apply it to the next lesson. You are using “organic language acquisition”. New words and phrases are continuously being introduced in small units. At the same time, words and phrases learned previously are being reinforced. If any weak areas are detected the program adapts to include missed vocabulary in subsequent reviews.

One of the best ways to reinforce what you are learning is to listen to the dialogue while watching a film in the language you are learning. This is especially helpful for improving pronunciation. The library system offers a solid collection of foreign films in a variety of languages as well as foreign television series that run longer than just one film to give you extra listening time.

Here are a few of my favorite series:

French

Disparue (The Disappearance) – criminal mystery

Engrenages (Spiral) – police procedural and legal drama

Le Bureau des Legendes (The Bureau) – political thriller

Danish

Rejseholdet (Unit One) – crime drama

Borgen – political drama

Swedish

Arne Dahl – crime drama

Beck – crime drama

German

Deutschland 83 – espionage thriller
