Feb. 11, 2020 – Children enter a world of stories when they visit their local libraries. Upon walking through the door, they have the opportunity to engage with countless resources to help them increase their literacy skills, all with the help of local librarians. The staff within the junior departments at each of our Lower Merion Libraries are especially equipped with the tools and accessories necessary to help your children succeed.

Did you know that Lower Merion Library System has multiple collections of e-books and e-resources? Here are just some of the awesome things you can find through our website with the click of a mouse:

Tumble Book Library: With your library card number and this online resource, you and your family can unlock hundreds of online picture books, read alongs, nonfiction books, videos, language learning resources, playlists, puzzles and games. There are categories sorted by genre, popular authors, school subjects, and reading level. Most materials within the Tumble Book Library are for grades 2-6, but there are plenty of resources like National Geographic Videos where the whole family can sit down to learn something new.

Scholastic Book Flix: With videos and books about animals, cultures, music, planets, and languages, Book Flix is sure to offer something interesting for every child. After clicking on a category, you have the option to read or watch a story, as well as opportunities to play puzzle games and explore further information on topics you find interesting. BookFlix also has a toggle switch to change from English to Spanish so Spanish-speaking families can engage with the resources as well. You do need your library card number to log in to this resource.

True Flix: Children and families do not need a library card number to access this collection of information about people, places, nature, history, and science. With videos and e-books with clearly labeled reading and grade levels, True Flix offers non-stop nonfiction resources for your little learners. This site also features lesson plans and quizzes for families who may want to use these resources to help increase comprehension on the topics provided.

Homework Help: LMLS has a page specifically helpful for students of all ages who may need help with homework or research. This page offers direction with InfoTrac, a resource for research materials, which will aid middle and high school students. There is also a link to younger resources such as KidsClick!, an international digital children’s library with materials in several different languages about diverse cultures, and Kids InfoBits, a resource for elementary-aged children with information about current and past events, animals, arts, geography, literature, and more. The Pennsylvania POWER Kids’ Library has resources for homework and research too. Internet Safety: On this page, LMLS lists several resources that offer helpful tips and tricks for staying safe while browsing online. These resources include safety suggestions as well as games that teach safety survival for your young ones.

Why attend the library at all when you can access all of these great programs and products online? Our Lower Merion Library branches have educational toys, computers, and programs happening monthly so the fun never has to end for your family!

In addition to our weekly storytimes, most of our libraries have education learning station computers with educational games, as well as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs each month. Keep an eye on our calendars to follow along with our schedules

In 2018, with the help of the Director’s Office, each of our junior rooms received an expansion in their STEM material collections. With the addition of Cody, our coding caterpillar, the libraries also received education kits for children, Star Wars droid inventor kits, K’nex building, other block sets, and more!

All of these resources are waiting for you and your children through any of the six Lower Merion Libraries. If you have any questions, feel free to ask your local library staff, and don’t hesitate to visit one of our Lower Merion libraries to engage with our endless resources today!
